Breaking Tradition: Why You Should Consider Bringing Your Fiancé to the Bridal Appointment
It’s no secret that shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most important, and stressful, decisions you can make. You allow your mom, bridesmaids and friends help you decide which dress you should wear as you walk down the aisle to the love of your life, but one burning question is: Why? Why is such a big decision left up to those who aren’t going to have to live with your wedding pictures for the rest of their lives? Why can’t future hubby be let in on all of the unflattering fabrics, tulle, style disagreements and stress as well? Bringing your fiancé to your bridal appointment will include him in one of the most memorable details of the whole event, but many women don’t bring them because of tradition.
The History behind Not Seeing Each Other Before the Wedding
Tradition states that the groom cannot see the bride before the wedding because it’s “bad luck,” but is it really? Actually, the whole practice stems from the history of arranged marriages. Due to the fact that marriage was seen as a business transaction back in the day, the couple could not see each other until the wedding so that neither party could back down beforehand. The bridal veil was also implemented so that the groom could not see what the bride looked like until the last possible minute (at the altar) so that he could not back out of the marriage if she was unattractive.
Why You Should Bring Your Fiancé
1. He offers a different viewpoint.
Although you love your mother and your best friends to death, sometimes it can be refreshing to have the opinion of someone who isn’t using you as their own personal life-sized Barbie doll.
2. He probably knows your style better than you do.
If your man is in tune with your every move, he’ll be more helpful than anything at your bridal appointment. He can give you ideas that you may not have otherwise tried, and he can give you some honest feedback of what his vision of you walking down the aisle is.
3. He’ll boost your self-esteem.
Hearing how wide a dress made you look from your friends and family’s mocking remarks can take a toll on your nerves, bring down your mood and possibly ruin your appointment entirely. With your man there at your defense, he can reassure you that you’re beautiful no matter how awful a dress may look.
4. He’s paying for it.
If your fiancé is paying for your dress, he may want to have a say in what you wear and there’s nothing wrong with that. To some this may seem controlling, but if you’re known to over-spend, this may just be his way of staying out of bankruptcy! Just think, if he loves you in a dress that’s out of your price range more often than not he’ll find a way to buy it for you, which is a plus.
